In Swedish media, they actually compare Sochi to the National-Socialist Olympics in Berlin! It is in a column in the biggest newspaper here. The show was so good, and those international-think-tanks funded by Soros will fool us no more.
They did have a pretty opening ceremony. I liked the dream scape they created where everything looks like it's in the clouds.
Finally we are done with toilet pictures. Now our media is showing real pictures.
Cool opening ceremony. Hopefully the gays go back to their closets and let the Olympics finally be about the sports rather than their sexual deviancy.
It was wonderful to have a ceremony built just around classical music, rather than the superficial and annoying pop music noise. The Russians have a great cultural tradition and they did a wonderful job showing us that.
Thankfully, almost divinely, Bob Costas has contracted a bad case of conjunctivitis. He looks like he got punched in the eye. These Olympics have already been a huge success. I hope the American media doesn't have heaters in their rooms.
I think the opening ceremony is much better than the last summer Olympic in London.
Awesome work Russia. Ignore all the haters, particularly in the US who are trying again (unsuccessfully) to makes this a political event!
Loved the part about marriage: Between a man and a woman, starting a family. The way it should be.
Germany says uniforms have nothing to do with gays. German athletes say uniforms have nothing to do with Gays. Yet Gays are trying to say that they do. What stupidity.
Good luck Russia, have a great and safe Olympic.
Do gays think the earth revolves around them or something?
Bravo to the people of Russia ,they made it happen dispite the overwhelming desire for the west to see you fail. To bad the west still lives with the cold war, commies under every rock....LOL
I totally impressed with the video clips so far. They may have over spent, HOWEVER, they are spending it on visiting tourists and our athletes. I am going to ignore the negative reports. Concentrate on the positive...
Really nice photos, and a little less xenophobic review would have been appreciated. Still scared of Russians, Greg Whatiski??
Boy the Mass Media propaganda machine here in the States can't even say just a few positive things about Sochi without throwing in some low blows about Russia. They're not commies anymore - what about us?
Spectacular Olympic opening ceremonies Russia! Thank you for a job well done!
WOW - what an amazing Opening Ceremony! From Canada to Russia with love - best Olympic Opening Ceremony I have seen. It would have been amazing to see it live, but I enjoyed it on television. Looking forward to watching some competition in the days ahead, but also am looking forward to seeing CBC showing a lot of cultural stories about Russia and interviewing everyday Russians speaking about their country and its rich culture and history. Will be an amazing Olympics. CBC - you do the best Olympic coverage always.
Well done Russia. Incredible ceremony! You rocked it.
It was an absolutely brilliant opening ceremony. At moments the whole thing got beyond impressive. Elegant, intense, powerful and immensely creative. GO Russia!
This Gregg whatever, should not give up his day job. Almost middle school girl's lavatory reporting. He could not refrain from a sarcastic remark on each item he reports.....like a catty 14 yr. old girl. From what I pick up around the Web ---the Opening Ceremonies were Outstanding! An Olympians and Tourists Happy. My My.
Too bad nbc had to start things off with their political agenda and 15-20 minutes of Obama. Love the Olympics but very tough to watch this channel.
I watched it online - I thought it was amazing - 9.5/10, only because the ring botch and the pyro at the end seemed to go on forever.. The historical parts were done in a very classy way, and the finale was truly breathtaking.
Doesn't it seem as if the western press are hoping and praying for terrorist attacks as a consequence to Putin's anti-gay propoghanda legislation..? What psychos!!
The ceremony was awesome except for the commentators who kept talking and talking and talking. They ruined the beauty of the show. I could figure out what was going on – the music and visuals and actors told the story. I didn’t need them to tell me “this is the sad part if their history”. Please!
Thank you to the Russian people for all of the gifts they give to the world. Their hospitality is grand and their artistry enduring. a beautiful ceremony that welcomes the world. Lets not forget that this is about peaceful athletic competition, not politics. Lets enjoy an excellent Olympic games. There are enough problems in the world today, to be complaining about a countrys politics.
Russia which retains taste for values through culture of love of arts and US which chose decadent diversity, adulation of stupid celebrities and gay immorality as its future. US is doomed.
I love the Russian people.
Say what you want about Russia, but they are a culture that has endured much worse than scathing western criticism and snark and the country itself has been around for almost a thousand years. Check back with me in 800 years and see how well America will be holding up after centuries of rampant corporatism, war mongering, gay worship, and idolatry towards unsavory characters like Miley, Bieber, and Rick Ross....I'd be surprised if such a culture could even last for another 5 decades at this rate.
So cool! I wish I could be there.
Don't be jealous... just enjoy what Russia has to offer.
This was the best opening show ever period, winter or summer. Well done Russia, from an American.
What a marvelous, intelligent, warm, compact opening ceremony. Truly the best ever. Thank you, Sochi. Thank you, Russia. And of course, I am truly ashamed of our western media's ongoing malevolence. I hope Russians understand that the obnoxious mercenaries calling themselves journalists in no way represent the feelings of the ordinary people. Kind regards from Texas, USA.
It was indeed delightful!!
I loved the ethereal beauty and music - just lovely. It's sad there are so many people who can't get away from their bigotry toward others to just 'enjoy', and not look for a venue to voice their petty dislikes.
Best opening ceremonies ever!
It was a great display ! Great choreography. Russia should be proud. It is sport, time to let sport be sport...and get rid of politics and the such...
Excellent! The best opening ceremony I've ever seen at an Olympic Games. It was a thing of absolute beauty. Take a bow Russia.
Oh ''Independent'' are you serious? Comparison and boasting is all you could tell about a good and interesting (to say the least) presentation of Russia? Of course Russia doesn't have lots of world-wide-famous actors, JamesBonds nor PaulMcCartneys. Wanted to continue "..and Russians are so far away from British politeness " but I won't. How about the famous British tact? Before the next Olympic games please check briefly Wikipedia to find a bit about the history and symbols of the host-country. Just not to seem such an ignoramus.
Oh for goodness sake !
It was a magnificent show with thousands of technical firsts yet here you are poking fun at one tiny fault .
When you learn how many Brits were involved in the design & preparation of that amazing show of lights, maybe you won't be so keen to sneer .
Well done Russia you pulled it off.
Is the BBC really saying that Russia wasted too much money on the Sochi games? If so, Auntie's only jealous because Russia didn't consult her first about money-wasting ideas and projects. After all, she's the past master in that peculiar art.
I wonder how the BBC headcount at Sochi compares with that of, say, ITV and Sky. If the Mandela funeral is anything to go by, the Beeb's presence will be greater than the combined figure for other UK broadcasters.
Because western media is hell-bent on making Russian-hosted Olympics look bad, they've been manufacturing BS news.
Bashing Russia just to bash Russia isn't cool, nor is it deserved. Bravo for a spectacular Opening Ceremony, and I truly wish that I had the resources to attend in-person.
Yeah with flurry of anti Russian stories coming out daily as if we are not in the middle of a propaganda war. I bet the media wants to start another Cold War so there readership goes up, got to get that ad money don't you
As an American, I am appalled at the behavior and spoiled BRATiness of the American news media. What a bunch of divas? I bet when they go camping, they complain when the trees don't lend them cushiony soft toilet paper instead of leaves. What an embarrassment? Every Olympics has technical problems. Even in Atlanta, there was an actual bombing. Duh! I think the news media's biggest issues is their desire to criticize Putin for his stand on homosexuality and that is clouding their judgment on an entirely unrelated matter - sports. The Olympics has nothing to do with sexuality. It has nothing to do with politics. And the host nation is supposed to toot their own horns and showcase their own culture and history - not cowtow to the divas at CNN. Quite frankly, Putin should learn from Gov Christie and make sure that not a single CNN toilet flushes. Make them have to smell their own crap for a while. Lord knows the rest of America has been smelling CNN stink it up for far too long.
Russia has the dance, the music and the literature. Tonight's opening was amazing.
Couldn't agree with you more! The news-coverage rhetoric has been absurd - all they want is for these olympics to fail. The reason why this is all so public, is that we are in the golden age of social media, and any malfunction gets reported ASAP. I gurarntee you, every olympic game had malfunctions, and some even terrorist acts, but i don't remember coverage like this. I don't really care if a news reporters water is yellow - that happens where I live all the time (Los Angeles). How about some positive stories about the athletes themselves - the spotlight should be on them, as they busted their butts majority of their adulthood lives just to have this opportunity.
I find it hilarious the love of the American media. We are losing sleep over your yellow water. I do remember when America was a gracious visitor to other foreign countries, showing appreciation of their efforts where possible. In Sochi you make us out to be spoiled cowards. How about throwing them a bone. It's called courtesy....never mind.
Whats with all the deliberate negative press coverage of the Winter Olympic games in Russia?
I don't recall any spiteful press reports about the Beijing Olympic Games in China 2008 - a country with the worst record on human rights violations in the world.
Anyway, I watched the Sochi opening ceremony and I thought it was superb!
Loved every minute of it.
Far superior to London 2012 opening ceremony - which was a load of self righteous cr@p!
The artistic and theatrical richness of Russia's 1000 year old culture was on grand display tonight.
